I got asked recently “Should I convert my personal Facebook account to a Facebook business page or keep my personal account and create a new business page?

So what do you think?

I like to keep things simple so I first said I always think it is better to keep your personal Facebook account and create a separate Facebook business page. Then the more I thought about it I decided to compare the two options.

(a) Convert a Personal Facebook account to a business page?

Positive: One thing about converting over is that you won’t have to start building a fanbase from scratch.
Negative: Once you do, you can’t revert back and can’t add friends and so lose the facility to chat with them as you.

(b) Keep a Personal Facebook account and create a business page?

Positive: You get to keep your personal account and have a separate business page (so no worrying about mixing business with pleasure).
Negative: You have to build your page and fanbase from scratch, which can take time and Facebook is constantly changing.

So you have decided you wish to convert…

If you want to convert your personal Facebook account to a business page here’s the steps:

  • Go to your personal Facebook account
  • Click on (upside down triangle) top right corner
  • Click on “Settings”
  • Now in General Account Settings
  • Click on “Download a copy of your Facebook Data”
  • Click on “Start My Archive”
  • Next, go back to the (upside down triangle) top right corner
  • Click on “Create A Page”
  • Click on “Migrate Profile to Page”
  • Click on “Get Started”
  • You will get a message “You’ve created a new Facebook Page”
  • Click “Continue”
  • Now you have converted your profile to a page.

Here’s a quick video on how you can do it also: [VIDEO].

In Conclusion…

So, looking at both sides of the coin, my preference is to keep a personal Facebook account and create a new business page. I know it takes time to build a following, but you do keep your personal life separate to your business life. You can share out posts from your business page onto your personal account to help with organically building a following.

Do you agree? What do you think? Have you converted your personal Facebook account to a Facebook business page? Or are you like me and prefer having your personal account plus a business page? Let me know I would be very interested to hear what you think.
